What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is the art of Christian conversation and listening
carried out in the context of a trusting relationship.

The premise of Spiritual Direction is that God is present and active in your daily life in a multitude of ways. When you slow down, begin to reflect, and take a long, loving look at what is happening around you, you begin to become more aware of the presence of God. Through the slow, loving, grace-filled time of direction, you gain a deeper understanding of yourself, God, and your unique calling on this journey.   An open heart and open mind are the only requirements needed with Spiritual Direction.

As a spiritual director, I am a trained Christian companion who listens to your life story with an ear for discerning the movement of the Holy Spirit in your life. God is the true Guide and Director. It is a conversation of the heart, building into your intimate relationship with God  over a lifetime, through all the ordinary moments and the mountaintop and valley experiences as well. As you share, I am here to hold your heart by listening deeply, asking thoughtful questions, and offering insights or spiritual practices at times, always seeking God.

My work as your director is to focus my attention on your spiritual experience, a deepening of your personal relationship with God. Therefore, I will not try to analyze or fix you (I am not a therapist) even though our conversations may involve deep personal sharing and exploration of personal crisis and suffering.  As you continue this journey, my hope is that your relationship with God deepens and then God’s love pours out into your daily life. We are not in a hurry, but prefer to attend to the slow, faithful work of God in your life with patience.

Spiritual Direction is for you if you are:

  • longing for a deeper connection to God, your true self, and others

  • seeking someone to journey with you to explore and help note God’s presence and work in your life

  • discerning a decision in life

  • facing a dry or challenging time in your spiritual journey

"The whole purpose of spiritual direction is to penetrate beneath the surface of a [person’s] life, to get behind the façade of conventional gestures and attitudes which one presents to the world, and to bring out inner spiritual freedom, one’s inmost truth, which is what we call the likeness of Christ in one’s soul."

-Thomas Merton
